PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT
Rocky Boy Health Center is actively monitoring state and federal public health advisories regarding medetomidine, a veterinary sedative that has recently been identified in portions of the illicit fentanyl supply within the United States.
At this time, there are no confirmed overdose cases, toxicology reports, or verified evidence indicating the presence of medetomidine within the Rocky Boy community or service area. However, Rocky Boy Health Center remains committed to proactively educating and informing the community about emerging public health concerns and the evolving risks associated with illicit substances.
RBHC Psychologist Dr. Deborah Essert emphasized the continued importance of naloxone (Narcan) during suspected overdoses:
“Community members should continue administering Narcan during a suspected overdose even if another substance like medetomidine may also be involved. Narcan can still reverse the opioid effects of fentanyl and save lives. We encourage people to carry additional doses of Narcan, call 911 immediately, and continue providing rescue measures until emergency responders arrive.”
Community members are encouraged to continue practicing overdose prevention and harm reduction measures, including:
• Carrying naloxone (Narcan)
• Calling 911 immediately during suspected overdoses
• Avoiding substance use alone
• Seeking medical attention when needed
• Accessing behavioral health and substance use support services
Rocky Boy Health Center remains dedicated to protecting community health through prevention, education, behavioral health support, and access to medical care and resources.
